Which Candidate Will Help You More?
Here’s what Harris and Trump stand for, on the issues visited most often on this website. You do the scoring, and let that shape your choice.
INFLATION, HOUSING COSTS & THE ECONOMY
Harris: Keep inflation low (it is currently just 2.4%). Invest in new jobs (she and Biden created more new jobs than any Administration in US history). Tax credits for first-time home-buyers.
Trump: Place big tariffs on all overseas products in an effort to protect American jobs. (Virtually all economists say this will create much higher costs for consumers, higher inflation, and retaliatory tariffs). Make his 2017 tax cuts permanent (benefitting primarily the top 5% by wealth and income). Lower the corporate income tax to 15%.
IMMIGRATION
Harris: Keep immigration across our southern border low (it is currently at levels last seen pre-pandemic and during Trump’s term in office). Pass bipartisan laws that fix our immigration system. Respect people regardless of their country of origin and recognize immigrants as important drivers of our economy.
Trump: Deport all immigrants here without legal status, including those who have been here for decades, held jobs, paid taxes and raised children here – 15-20 million in all, equivalent to the entire population of New York State. The largest deportation in U.S. history. Reinstate travel bans from majority-Muslim countries.
PRESERVING DEMOCRACY
Harris: Pass laws to protect American citizens’ ability to vote, safe and secure elections, and the peaceful transfer of power from one President to the next. Harris has explicitly committed to accepting the results of this election. As Vice President, she would certify the results if Trump wins.
Trump: Trump has never accepted the results of the 2020 election and will not commit to accepting the results of this one. VP candidate JD Vance says he would not have certified Joe Biden’s election on January 6 in 2020 and would not commit to doing so in 2024. Trump vows to replace many thousands of federal government staff members with people loyal to him, to permit decisions and actions without oversight, checks or balances – a return to the jobs-through-patronage era in American history. Trump has promised his supporters that if he wins, they “would not have to vote any more.” American democracy would in this case effectively be ended.
GAZA AND UKRAINE
Harris: Continue strong support for NATO and Ukraine, seeing Russian president Putin’s unprovoked invasion there a crucial test of European and U.S. resolve. Continue support for Israel, while also pushing for a long-term, two-state solution that would provide safe harbor for the Palestinian people and end hostilities in the Middle East.
Trump: Consider ending all support for Ukraine, and providing much less support for NATO. End the U.S.’s role as “policeman” in the world. Support Israel and its president, Benjamin Netanyahu, with little or no regard to the interests of the Palestinian people.
REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS
Harris: Restore the protections of Roe v Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court case that established women’s access to abortion before the fetus becomes viable (24 weeks). Do this through legislative action to protect this right from Supreme Court interference.
Trump: Leave decisions about abortion restrictions and other forms of prenatal care up to the states. Preserve the Supreme Court decision, reached in 2022 with his three nominated Court Justices in support, that ended Roe v Wade’s protections after 50 years of precedent.
CLIMATE CHANGE
Harris: Respect the now-established science on climate change and continue the Biden-Harris Administration’s track record in addressing it – the strongest in American history, through environmental policymaking and the investments in the Inflation Reduction Act, passed without a single Republican vote.
Trump: Continue calling climate change a hoax and “the greatest scam in American history.” Eliminate climate change as a policy priority and roll back environmental safeguards in favor of business interests.
GUN LAWS
Harris: Protect the 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, as a gun-owner herself, while also advocating for gun safety laws – like background checks and restoring the ban on assault weapons – that big majorities of the American people say they want.
Trump: Oppose any form of gun legislation, viewing it as a slippery slope to elimination of the 2nd Amendment.
ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE
Harris: Widen access to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) with its low costs and health-insurance protections for Americans’ pre-existing conditions. ACA currently provides insurance to 45 million Americans. Expand access to Medicaid and Medicare. Broaden the regulation of drug prices (like $35 insulin) beyond Medicaid participants to all Americans.
Trump: Continue the effort from the first Trump term in office to eliminate the ACA, with no alternative plan in sight.
REDUCING THE WEALTH & INCOME GAP
Harris: End Trump’s 2017 tax cuts. Attack the income and wealth gaps and reduce them through tax policies that require the top 5% and large corporations to pay their fair share.
Trump: Make the 2017 tax cuts permanent. Provide other tax breaks to corporations and the nation’s wealthiest individuals, on the now completely-disproven theory that higher corporate profits will over time trickle down through the economy.
FREEDOM TO MARRY/LGBTQ RIGHTS
Harris: Ban discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in housing, health care and public accommodations, through the Equality Act.
Trump: Continue efforts to restrict LGBTQ rights in favor of discriminatory religious convictions. Cut existing federal funding for gender-affirming care.
PUBLIC EDUCATION & BOOK-BANNING
Harris: Increase funding for public education and support for public school teachers. Oppose voucher programs that steer public funds to private and religious schools. Oppose efforts to ban books from school and public libraries.
Trump: Support efforts to enable parents to use public funds through vouchers to send their children to private and religious schools. Eliminate the U.S. Department of Education, which funnels all federal dollars to schools and works to ensure school quality. End federal funding for any school or college offering anti-racism curricula.
